The thawte Web of Trust (WOT) was devised by thawte to promote a culture of trust. It is a Certification system that allows your identity to be validated for use in your Personal Certificate. This is done through approaching a recognized thawte Notary who, on being shown the relevant proof, will validate your ID. You, in turn, can then become a thawte Notary yourself, and begin validating others' identities.

When you first enroll in the thawte Personal Certification System your identity is not trusted. This means that you are not able to put your name into any certificates - your name simply appears as "Thawte Freemail Member".

Adding your name to the certificate is a simple matter of finding a Web of Trust (WOT) Notary in your area using the Notary map. A thawte Notary will be able to award you a number of Trust Points when you appear in person with your necessary identifying documentation.

The more experienced the thawte Notary, the more Trust Points he/she can assign to you. thawte Notaries can assign between 10 and 35 points. Once you have accumulated 50 Trust Points you become trusted, and you can put your name in your personal certificate.

To become a Web of Trust (WOT) Notary you will need to accumulate 100 Trust Points. Once you have accumulated these points, you will be assigned thawte Notary status and your name will appear in the Directory of thawte Notaries. You are now able to assign Trust Points to friends and acquaintances.

If there are not enough/no thawte Notaries in your area, your next option is to enroll in our Trusted Third Party Program (TTP). In this system, thawte will notarize your identity at a cost of $25.

thawte Notaries and members of the thawte Web of Trust need to follow clear guidelines and rules to ensure a high level of assurance for the information in these certificates. These rules are binding on all thawte Web of Trust notaries and members. Please make sure that you have read and fully understand these rules before becoming a thawte notary or having your identity assured by a thawte notary. If you do not follow these rules then you may be liable if people suffer damages as a consequence. These rules use arbitrary genders to describe members and thawte notaries - they apply to both genders.

Country specific restrictions
You are restricted from joining this program to the extent that the laws and regulations of your country and/or jurisdictions do not allow you to participate in the thawte Web of Trust notary program. By joining the thawte Web of Trust notary program you confirm that you are not in violation of the laws and regulations of your country and/or jurisdiction.

Personal Appearance
A thawte notary may only assign Trust Points to a member if (s)he meets the member in person, and views original copies of the member's identification documents. At least one form of photo identity must be shown to the thawte notary. The member must provide the thawte notary with copies of these identification documents.

Presentation of Identification Documents with Copies
A thawte Notary must confirm the identity of the member by comparing the member information in the thawte Personal Certificate System with the identification document/s presented by the member. The thawte notary must also ensure that the copies of the identification documents presented by the member are true copies of the original documents presented by the member. The members' identification documents must include at least one photo identity document. This photo identity document must be issued by a state or governmental body, and must be nationally recognized as an acceptable form of identity. Photographs that are included in this documentation must bear a good likeness to the member. Please also review the thawte Notarization Procedures for important notes regarding assurances. At least one of the forms of identity presented needs to contain the identification number used in the applicant's account in the Personal Certificate system

Retention of Copies
Each thawte notary must retain a copy of the identifying documentation used to confirm the member's identity for every assertion made by that thawte notary.

Statement of thawte Notarization
The member and the thawte notary must both sign a copy of the "Statement of Notarization" provided by thawte during the identity assertion process. The thawte notary must keep this signed statement on record for 5 years.

Confidentiality
thawte Notaries may not disclose to any party other than thawte any information received from the member during the notarization process, and must take reasonable steps to keep documentation confidential.

Notary Fees
thawte Notaries may charge a fee for an Identity Assertion as long as the fee charged is reflected in the Directory of thawte Notaries. A thawte notary may not charge a different fee for notarization from that given in the Directory.

Liability
A thawte notary may be held responsible if (s)he is unable to provide thawte with copies of a member's identifying documentation upon request.

Notary Trust Points
thawte may, at its sole discretion, at any time, change the number of Trust Points that a thawte notary can assign. In the absence of such action by thawte , a thawte notary will be able to assign between 10 and 35 Trust Points based on the number of assertions that thawte notary has already made.

How many Trust Points can a thawte notary give?
A new thawte notary will be able to assign up to 10 Trust Points to any person in the system. As the thawte notary becomes more experienced we allow her to assign more points in an identity assertion. A very experienced thawte notary can assign 35 points to a new member. This means that it will take 10 new thawte notaries, or 3 experienced thawte notaries, or a combination of those two, to make a new member trusted. We judge the "experience" of the thawte notary by the number of trust assertions (s)he has made about other members. A thawte Notary under the age of 21 will never be allowed to assign more than 10 Trust Points.

Can't find a thawte notary?
The TTP system is designed for people who do not have any thawte Notaries in their area but would like to get notarized. For these individuals, thawte provides a US $25 alternative process to the thawte Web of Trust verification system which involves Trusted Third Party verification. The Trusted Third Parties that you can use are attorneys, certified public accountants and bank managers. These are reputable and established professionals whose identity can be verified and who can be trusted to verify your identity. This service is available to anyone, anywhere in the world who is already enrolled in our Freemail Personal Certificate System and who is not yet a thawte Notary.

Individuals who have their identities validated in this way will be issued with 100 points, which means that they will be able to obtain personal Freemail certificates containing their name. Also, they will become thawte notaries for the Web of Trust, with the ability to issue up to 35 points to people whose identities they validate.

In order to have your identity validated you are required to take two forms of nationally recognized photo identity to two different trusted third parties, and either post or fax them to thawte . [Please note that “Country specific restrictions” may apply, see below.] If you do not have two forms of photo identity you can contact us . More detailed instructions as well as the forms that you require will be presented to you later on in the enrolment process.

This service carries a fee of US$25, payable either by check or credit card. Both your application and your payment details need to be in our system before your points will be issued to you. Please follow the link below to proceed.

Below is a list of important instructions for the Remote Authentication System. Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure that you are notarized quickly. We recommend that you print or bookmark this page.

Remote Authentication Instructions.
Please note that you need to be notarized by TWO "Trusted Third Parties", and that they need to meet the following requirements:

Bank Manager:
Must be the manager of a branch of registered banking institution. The branch must be listed as such in the local telephone directory.

• Practicing Attorney:
Must be registered with the State Bar Association or your country's equivalent, and currently practicing as an attorney. The attorney's law offices must be listed as such in the local telephone directory.

CPA:
Must be licensed as a Certified Public Accountant with the relevant State or country authorities, and must be practicing as a CPA from an office that is listed as such in the local telephone directory.

If you are at all unsure if your chosen trusted third parties meet the requirements or if you are unable to find suitable trusted third parties, please rather contact the adgrafics .

Here are some of the rules and instructions:

• You will need to print out 2 (two) copies of the Web of Trust Notarization Form .
• Possess 2 different, original and nationally recognized forms of photo-identification. Ideally these should be your passport and your drivers license. Student cards, employee badges and bank photo credit cards are not acceptable forms of identification. If you do not have two forms of photo-identity, then please email the Web of Trust before you continue.
• Make TWO photo-copies of each of your photo-identities.
• Find 2 trusted third parties who meet the requirements above, and who are willing to certify your identity to thawte .
• Ask each of the trusted third parties to complete a form, verify your photo-identity, sign the form and the copies of BOTH your photo-ids.
• Ask each of the trusted third parties to make a copy of the signed form and to keep it in a safe place for at most 30 days, or until thawte calls them to confirm their certification of your identity.
• Checks are made out to " thawte Consulting" to the value of US$25. Please make sure the check is crossed. You can either post or fax your documents to us.

The following guidelines are intended to assist you with the process of issuing points to people you are vouching for. As always, if you are uncertain about how to proceed, or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact admin@adgrafics.net

• Read through the Web of Trust Rules and make sure that you and the applicant understand them before you make the identity assertion.
• The thawte Web of Trust is ONLY based on FACE-TO-FACE identity verification. You need to meet with the applicant in person and check their identity documentation. Be sure to check their photo identity as well as their personal information details.
• Although the rules stipulate that only one form of photo identity needs to be presented for an assertion to take place, the more the merrier. Acceptable forms of photo identity are nationally recognized photo i dentities which are issued by the government or the state. These include passports, drivers licenses (if they are photo ID's), identity cards etc. Each country is different, and identity documents may differ from country to country.
• At least one of the forms of identity presented needs to contain the identification number used in the applicant's account in the Personal Certificate system
• The applicant's name in the thawte database must correspond to their name as it is in their identity documentation. They must include their first and last names, although they may leave out their middle names if they so wish. We do not accept the use of an initial in the place of the first name. No prefixes or suffixes will be accepted and no work details, telephone numbers or addresses can be added to their Certificate, only their name.
• If any of an applicant's details in the thawte database do not match their identity documentation, please contact weboftrust@thawte.com to have their details changed, before you assure their identity.
• To make an assertion go to the following URL and fill in the applicant's thawte User ID: https://www.thawte.com/cgi/personal/wot/assert.exe [Please note that you may only enter a thawte User ID if an assertion is requested by an individual, viewing this private information for any other purpose including but not restricted to testing, constitutes a breach of privacy which violates our rules.]
• When you click 'next', the form that appears will contain the applicant's details. Please check that they match the details on their ID. You must print this form out, both you and the applicant must sign it, and you must keep the form and a photocopy of the applicant's ID document for 5 years.
• If you meet with the applicant without access to a computer, then prior to your meeting, go to https://www.thawte.com/cgi/personal/wot/assert.exe and click on the link at the bottom of the page. This will bring up a blank form, which you can print out and take to your meeting and complete there by hand. You can then make the online assertion at home. MAKE SURE you compare what you notarized to the details in the database!

How Many Trust Points Can a Notary Give?
A new notary will be able to assign up to 10 Trust Points to any person in the system. As the notary becomes more experienced we allow the notary to assign more points in an identity assertion. A very experienced notary can assign 35 points to a new member. This means that it will take 10 new notaries, or 3 experienced notaries, or a combination of those two, to make a new member trusted. We judge the "experience" of the notary by the number of trust assertions she has made about other members. A notary under the age of 21 will never be allowed to assign more than 10 Trust Points.
* Please note: Notaries who have their identities validated via the remote authentication method are able to assign 35 points from the beginning.
